It’s Ali McGowan here from Development, acting as Editor in Chief today. I have to say today’s been busier than ever, but I got lots and lots done… but it’s also been a very sad day because I hurt my foot so much that I cannot run the Manchester 10k on Sunday! (It’s not all doom and gloom though because my place won’t go to waste… Nigel Wood has jumped at the chance to take my place – so cheer him on and let’s see if he beats his last 10k time! Go Nige!)

Anyway, down to business. Aaron in Networks kicks things off for us with a very interesting, if slightly mysterious, update!

Start of night: Networks.

Busy.

Development underway on the 21st Century Network. We’ve also got ideas for the 22ndCN, involving the sewers and using ‘rat-adaptive’ technology as someone put it in the forums. Eyes on monitoring all day, as usual; as well as general maintenance in our overalls using spanners. There’s been Parbin ‘malarkey’, as well as dedicated, professional first and second line work from NetOps support. Some are stuck in likely roasting server rooms performing several upgrades to our gadgetry.

Building hardware to support the PlusNet spud gun (working title). To be trialled internally and then rolled out to the adoring public. Wiki documentation updated. Some chaps have been tracking a few small bugs in our Exim configuration, and generally working on the mail platform. If the Royal Mail had such engineers, you’d get your post before your toast. Post before toast. I like that. Kind of catchy. Last but not least, work on the Ellacoya accounting platform. This one can’t be viewed on our regular web-cams, it will be a pay-per-view event only.

Now then peeps, the Top 5 on this Wednesday arvo is as follows:

1) Router Setup/Config – Old and new customers alike requiring help on setting up their routers, the older customers needing help after purchasing new (and sometimes wireless) routers, or after computer formats, and new customers needing general set-up help.

2) Fault chasing – Mainly No Sync and Intermittent logged faults, no determined pattern, and most of these faults (especially No Sync) that have been already logged and just requiring a update.

3) E-mail client set-up – customers needing help to set-up their email clients for the first time, mostly Outlook Express but a few Mac Mail queries cropping up.

4) Provisioning Updates – A large number of customers calling in to confirm the progress of their order, supply valid MAC keys, or confirm new numbers for broadband provisioning.

5) Fault Diagnosing – Again mainly No Sync and Intermittent fault types, users calling as sync status is being lost, and needing to be advised of master socket/hardware/alternative equipment checks, and a few call backs after these being checked but the issue persisting.

I’ve pushed out improvements to both the Flickr and Twitter plugins, constructed some more UML docs for Customer Generated Content, and got annoyed with the limitations and quirks of open source UML tools

It seems to have mostly been a day of planning for our guys. We’ve all been involved in various meetings this morning, and the team have spent a couple of hours this afternoon planning ahead for the next few months, as well as looking after our current projects of course!

Last but by no means least, it’s over to Development for a quick update:

Hi all, Matt from Java Development.

Things have been very busy in Dev this week with the Brightview integration nearing completion. I have been fixing my own areas of bugs related to connecting to the VISP portals. It’s been a difficult week but things are starting to look good. My part of the rollout happens tomorrow morning so I’ve also been making sure everything is prepared and ready to roll.

The rest of the Java team has either been working on upgrading our back-end application servers or upgrading our broadband management servers. All this work is now ready for testing.

That’s all for this evening folks – looks like a pleasant evening out, so my stroll (read ‘hobble’) to the station should not be too bad
