[...] There’s no denying it, file sharing is a major internet issue gaining quite a bit of time and space on news programs and in papers. It’s nice to see enta sharing the stance we’ve taken on the same issue. [...]

They are never gonna stop file sharers. There are web-based p2p services like FilesWire which work directly from the web and can be used on any internet connected computer. (work, internet cafe, uni, etc). So how are they going to pinpoint p2p activity if it is not even tied to your ip address.

"...if want the convenience of using the MP3 player technically you need to purchase the MP3s too."

Just because a Sony laywer says it's illegal to rip CDs, does not make his statement true. In addition, this is a US lawyer; why do his statements have anything to do with Plusnet customers?

'but expecting to get music 100% for free seems unreasonable'

Check out We7. Free music, some to download, lots to stream from the Sony / BMG Catalogue

Downloads come as a DRM-Free MP3 with a ~5 second ad at the start. Every month, and 14 days after the initial download, you can download 20 of them ad and DRM free.

Sure, this will not replace illegal download for some, but those who wish to remain within the bounds of the law, it is a good alternative

nerd. -

'I’ll only ever consider free and/or DRM-free downloads.'

Really? DRM-free I understand and support, but expecting to get music 100% for free seems unreasonable. If the model is such that the creators, not the middlemen, are getting the profits, then that strikes me as a good solution.

I think one of the problems is that people are stuck in their ways. It has taken so long for the music industry to catch up and start offering DRM-free downloads at a sensible price that by now everyone has just got used to illegal file sharing. Legal downloads have little perceived advantage over illegal downloads and one major disadvantage (cost). What incentive is there to switch?

<em>"Vodafone have recently launched MusicStation, for £1.99 per week you can listen to any of over 1 million songs on your mobile phone."</em>

And own none of it. Once you stop paying your £104 a year you're left with nothing to show for it.

I accept most of your argument(s) but that style service is not the way forward. I'll only ever consider free and/or DRM-free downloads.
