End of Day: 18th April

April 18th, 2008 at 18:54 by Dave Tomlinson

Well here we are again, the end of another week. Is time going faster or is it just my theory on six dimensional space time to try and negate the effects of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle catching up with us all? More…

Industry / technology news update 17/04/08

April 17th, 2008 at 18:04 by Dan Kirkland

Some people think that I know what’s going on in the technology and internet industry so I’m about to be found out. That is, unless you can help me! On a weekly basis, normally Thursdays, I’m going to post a roundup of industry news that caught my eye. If you think there’s other equally (or more) interesting technology / industry news then just add a comment to the blog with details and a link to the story. Anyway, let’s get down to business::

End of Day: 17th April

April 17th, 2008 at 17:48 by Colin Ogilvie

It’s a short End of Day today… almost the entire business attended this afternoon’s Company Rally where we had a review of the last year from various departments and a view of the forthcoming year. I also seem to have been roped in to this as Mr Wing who was due to edit has gone home to get plastered… oh no, that was to do some plastering :)

Asus Eee PC 900 Due for release in May

April 17th, 2008 at 10:02 by Jamie_Hardy

It looks like Asus is rushing to get its new improved version of its Eee PC out, bringing forward its release date by a month.  This may be in response to similar laptops having been announced by other companies (several of these using the new Intel Atom-powered processors), or they may have just been waiting for Microsoft to announce that it is extending support for Windows XP (since will now be a Windows XP version of the Eee PC).  XP will now be supported until to 2010 for this type of laptop: more about this at Gizmodo Windows XP Life extended .

And it's goodbye from him.....

April 16th, 2008 at 17:28 by Dean

9 years and 2 months ago I started on a very exciting journey with PlusNet.

I started off as the sole developer, establishing what is now PlusNet’s Workplace solution. Workplace is the software solution which pretty much controls everything within PlusNet. It includes the customer management, product management, billing engine and internal calendaring functionality amongst other things. It also ties together the network and software pieces of the business so we have a single platform - and not multiple systems that don’t talk to each other. More…

It’s Ali here, with my second stint as Editor. I can only assume that as I didn’t get fired last time, I must have done an OK job! Either that or Pete is getting very desperate… More…

Mac or Hack?

April 16th, 2008 at 16:08 by MattGrest

People are split firmly into two camps with regards to their view of the OSX Operating system. There are those that love it and those that haven’t tried it yet.

Up until now OSX has been strictly “for Macs only” (aside from hacking around getting an illegally modified version installed on a PC), but Psystar, a Miami company, announced this week of the launch of the £200 “Open PC” that is capable of running an unmodified Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

When you compare the configuration of the OpenPC with that of a Mac Mini you find that “the Mac Mini costs 150% of the price of the OpenPC while offering poorer performance, smaller storage space, and RAM”.

Apple ran an authorized Mac clone program for a stint of about two years in the mid-to-late 90’s, but upon Steve Jobs’ return to the business this was ceased.

Following the announcement by Psystar earlier this week, their website crashed under the load. The company said its web traffic peaked at over 30,000 hits per second on Monday, causing an outage; so there’s an undoubted demand for what they are offering.

It will be interesting to see how quickly the Apple legal team respond…
