"The only real problem being that iplayer isn’t currently set up to do it via a schedule."

We can already block (or very much restrict) Kontiki usage during the daytime using our traffic management platform. But that's really not the same as deliberately scheduling a programme to download overnight, and of course this doesn't work for the flash/streaming version of iPlayer.

We would love to put customers in control of what protocols get priority at what time, perhaps with some sort of desktop app that interfaces with our website/traffic management system to queue programmes up. We'll be very interested to see how Kangaroo develops especially if we can plug it into our traffic control system somehow.

"Does Plusnet foresee overnight bandwidth becoming limited if large numbers of people start using iplayer etc during this period?"

I suppose it's a possibility, but for the foreseeable future doesn't seem very likely. If you have a look at the third graph on our network page (the multi-coloured one showing different traffic types) there are very pronounced peaks and troughs. Overnight we're less than 50% utilised so there is a massive amount of bandwidth available. I'll ask Dave T to work out how many episodes of time-shift Dr Who required to fill the network overnight :-)

I know it won’t suite everyone but downloading programs during the overnight ‘free’ period is a great solution. The only real problem being that iplayer isn’t currently set up to do it via a schedule.

Hopefully ‘Kangaroo’ will have this built in. Does Plusnet foresee overnight bandwidth becoming limited if large numbers of people start using iplayer etc during this period?

Have to admit I love these blogs. Its very interesting to see someone explain the problems ISPs face, without blaming everyone else for the problems.

I look forward to the blog explaining how plans are being developed to expand bandwidth across the whole UK network. We hear a lot about how users use too much, but not very much about how ISPs are doing everything in their power to meet demand.

Network bandwidth management is not as new as most Broadband users believe and is not the 'BEAST' it is often made out to be. Aggregating multiple streams of data down a single pipe (smaller in size than the sum of the inputs!) has been around for a long time. Anyone recall Stat-muxing? More recently it has become a necessity to ensure that best use is made of ALL the paid for capacity on any link. The PlusNet mechanism of adding new capacity in a timely manner, combined with good traffic management keeps the costs down.

Simply adding sufficient capacity to match peak demand leaves a lot of unused (and unpaid for!) capacity in the troughs.

not fogetting that iplayer will become something else in project kangaroo - including itv and channel 4 content in a single place, making online (UK) mainstream tv content more accessible. so the 10% may very soon become 15%

great blog by the way Mr A!
