End of Day: 27th March

March 27th, 2008 at 18:47 by Dan Kirkland

Dan here,

Wow, what a day!  Is it just me or do these bank holiday weeks always seem tougher than 5-day working weeks?  I’ve been pulled from pillar to post on Brightview integration work, got beaten at pool by Baz (made worse by the fact that he’s not very good!), and am also working on a business case for additional team members for our Architecture (or Archy as I call them) Team.  But I know you, you’re more interested in what the other departments have been up to so, without further ado, here’s Arek’s earache:

Hi, it’s Arek from Development here. I’m a developer and have been with PlusNet for more than a year now - however it’s my first EOD.   Today we’re very busy in Dev. Most of the guys, including me are working on the Brightview Phase 2 project. As part of this, I worked on the upgrade process for Madasafish customers, and this is in QA testing at the moment. Today I was fixing some bugs and supporting Matt from QA with tests. Live rollout is scheduled for Monday morning so keep your fingers crossed for me!

We’re in a very good position with the Brightview Phase 2 project because almost all of development is complete and we will hit our scheduled deadline without any slippage.

That’s it for now, take care folks!

So, who’s next?  Ah, let’s run over to your friendly CSC team and ask Bad Brad:

A varied day within CSC for Team A.   Here’s a peek at our top 5 issues:

1) Router Config - Mainly new customers getting stuck setting up for the first time.

2) House Moves - Unusually high amount of people wanting to arrange one or get more information on changing their number, whether it be by their choice or by BT renumbering.

3) Email - Sending & receiving, usually corrected by giving the customer the correct settings or lowering firewall.

4) Faults (New) - No pattern but mainly basic checks for no sync in the master socket, or in some cases explaining these checks in depth.

5) Faults (Updates) - Prompted by voice mail or SMS from the Faults Team, or they have been advised of further checks and then call back with extra details.

What about you guys in Networks?  Josh, tell us all - including what Ade did this morning!

The big win up in Networks today was Ade getting our AuthDNS platform moved to a different network as part of the prep to replace the platform. We have also been finishing up some medium-term planning for the network as a whole, looking at what we need to do to each area from a high level … now we just need to find the time to do it!

I have been working on strengthening our data centre environmental monitoring (temperature and the like) with a bit of tidying up along the way.

Josh

Thanks Josh, now let’s march on towards Handy Mandy who’s looking dandy eating some candy and ask her what Comms have been communicating.

After yesterday’s EOD frivolities I thought I’d stick to good old-fashioned English for today’s version :-)I have been dealing with problems, development change controls and some process changes for our Home Phone service, along with communicating our SMS changes to customers and staff internally.James has been everyone’s ‘buddy’ today, being the point of contact for our MAAF colleagues, our shiny new sales team and the CSC at large, along with helping out customers in the forums.

Matt has been helping our colleagues in the Faults department keep within target for fault tickets and escalations, and will be covering the forums this evening when everyone else goes home.

Chris has been in the forums, as well as dealing with problems, service status messaging and some changes to our ticket response system.

Bob has been dealing with Network Change Controls, writing some Postini update comms, and cursing his somewhat temperamental laptop (his choice phrases cannot be repeated in the EOD, though they do amuse the rest of us!).Have a good evening.Mand So that’s Comms, now zoom over to Marketing where Martyn is waiting to tell us about Walthamstow Market, Haymarket, and Market Deeping.

Here in marketing we’ve been working on promoting our current special offers. Spencer and I have been prototyping some changes to web pages to try and increase conversion. Chris has been ringing around venues in Sheffield trying to find somewhere for a LAN party, which from what I hear is quite a tricky task. We’ve also updated the polls on the Member Centre and the Community Site, and started work on the next edition of the newsletter.

Sorry, Martyn was obviously not talking about markets at all.  I’ll get my coat, but not before finding out what QA have been doing:

The QA Automated Testing Robot has crashed with the following error:

QA_OVERLOADED:10022 Please report error to your local administrator.

I guess QA are very … overloaded at the moment.

Oh well, so much for QA today!  Maybe they’ll tell you about Brightview, Billing, SMS, Upgrades and Staging tomorrow!

Blimey, is that the time already?  That reminds me, do the clocks go back this weekend?  Anyway, that’s it for today.  Have a good night!

Dan

p.s. I’ll be checking later to see if you’ve spotted my deliberate mistakes!

Dan

How on Earth do you know of Walthamstow Market - are you from North London? :?

And btw, yes the clocks do change this weekend.

Dan

I lived in The Stow for nearly a decade before deciding to give Sheffield a go.

My wife reminds me that the clocks go foward in spring (she says fall back, spring foward) so that means we can look forward to an hour's less kip !

James

<--- is also from North London :)

Indeed, I remember you saying so in a forum thread not too long ago... whereabouts from, exactly?

Dan

James, you support Spurs don't you so N10/N11 area probably.

(better hide from James for the next couple of working days)

James

Not quite, but not a million miles away.

North finchley, so N12.

Dan

James
