Thanks for this. What are your plans for increasing speeds with ADSL 2+ as BT rolls out its 21st Century Network? My exchange is due to have it available in a couple of months' time so I'm very interested

I am dissapointed as there seems to be still no plans to use the intermediate profiles of 1250 and 1750 that BT introduced last year. There are many people to whom speeds of above 2 meg are a pipe dream.

Thanks for the comment on the blog. I don’t quite have the data going back 5 years but I do have the last 2 and a bit. I’ve sent you a spreadsheet with the data that we publish each month and give to our Usergroup (last version is available here http://usergroup.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,5841.0.html) which splits the usage between our different product types as well as all customers and also between the lowest 90% of users and all users.

The usage we’ve seen isn’t as fast as 35% but then a combination of factors, such as our product design (usage allowances, traffic management, free usage hours) makes us a less appealing ISP to the very top percentage of customers who use multiple hundreds of GBs per month. So even though the usage patterns of customers are still very much slanted towards a tiny number usage a large percentage of the network that perhaps hasn’t grown out of control and thus caused some of the bigger growth others may have seen.

Let me know though if I can help in any other way or if there’s any other data you’d like to see.

Dave

Very helpful data. The interesting data for international comparisons would be how your traffic growth compares internationally. Here in the U.S., we're running growth of about 40% per user per year. Japan is running about 35%. Both have been roughly stable for about 5 years. Odlyzko has the best data.

Do you have comparable data you can share? I see your growth in 2007 was mostly slower, but you've picked up in 2008.

Help appreciated
