Chumby: Worth the wait!

March 3rd, 2008 at 14:36 by Kelly Dorset

Wired have got their hands on the newly released Chumby. I still want one and might have to import one. Still no word on a UK release.

There’s been a lot of hype about this thing. After years in development hell and numerous false starts, it’s been hailed as a revolution in internet access and also slammed as a half-baked gimmick. A gimmick it is not. After plugging in the plush device, we found the Chumby to be the perfect desktop companion, perfect for internet radio and watching eBay

I don't really see the appeal. It's just a glorified digital photo frame and I don't see the appeal of those either. But I reserve the right to change my mind if/when the community finds some really cool uses for it!

I picked one up whilst in the USA recently.

My first task was to get Ceefax on it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/emsef/2298035505/

Wow Matt.. the Ceefax viewer looks great! Reading the comments to that Wired review, it certainly seems that the Chumby has split the vote there. I think it's got such great potential (as Matt has demonstrated).. I'd love something like that to replace my alarm clock. Maybe someone will write a widget to get it to play badgerbadgerbadger at you to wake you up ;)

update: just how good is this though? http://www.chumby.com/guide/widget/BBC2%20Clock

another update: If you, like me, are wondering how you make widgets for the Chumby, the link you need is http://wiki.chumby.com/mediawiki/index.php/Developing_widgets_for_chumby - it uses Flash Lite 3.

I just like the idea of a bunch of PlusNet apps. View your usage on your Chumby!
