End of Day: 15th February

February 15th, 2008 at 17:33 by Colin Ogilvie

It’s Friday, which means it’s the End of the Week. We’ve also had the Forum Moderator’s visiting us today, hence why there’s been no presence of them on the forums today. Despite this everyone has been… enjoying the Fish and Chips for lunch today. (See, I didn’t mention it…)

First up, we have Stephen from Development who apparently wrote his End of Day at 9AM this morning…

Hurray, my turn for EOD again. I should have done it yesterday, but was snowed under, so Helen generously offered to swap EOD days.

Actually, I`m cheating here – it`s 9:02am and I`m writing the EOD already. How can I do that if the day hasn`t ended yes, I hear you ask?

Easy!

I can predict what Live Code Support will be doing – basically, if I leave it until 5:59pm I`ll be in a flap and I don`t want that. :-)

Our team doubled in size the other week, with the addition of Marc and Lucasz. Marc and I are busy plugging the holes of a yucky cleanup problem, while Lucasz is working on a billing-related issue. Karol is creating presentation slides that will help educate new-comers to the LCST.

When prompted, Steve also agreed that they’d also be dealing with the Ad-Hoc requests and P1s that were bound to happen.

Martyn from Marketing brings us this update:

What a hectic week it’s been in team Marketing. Yesterday we re-launched the My Referrals bounty offer, bigger and better than ever before, and today we’ve focussed on getting an email out to let customers know they can now get up to £45 for recommending a friend.

Away from My Referrals, we’ve been brainstorming ideas for a new look homepage and working on some local print advertising. The team also seems to be feeling musical, as we’ve had a lot of whistling and singing around the desk today. From Janet Jackson to the Sharkey and George theme tune, there’s been something for everyone….

We go down to Catherine in QA today:

Today in QA we’ve been dreaming we dwelt in marble halls, with serfs and vassals by our sides. Sadly, of course, the reality has been a cruel awakening back in the QA salt mines :-D

Since I had a good response to writing about something other than what we’ve actually been doing yesterday, I shall say that Gavin has been juggling piglets, Gary has been counting the hairs on a caterpillar, Paul has been filling the bath with multicoloured machine parts and Nigel has been recording the sound of a chair melting.

I, meanwhile, have been taking hardcore hallucinogenics (apparently), telling some truly appalling jokes and meeting the charming moderators of the PN forums. Roll on the weekend, because that way it’ll get stretched out over the week and we’ll all have a holiday. Hurrah!

The ‘Web Team’ today have been lacking in Staff with the manages having a well deserved holiday, and Colin being with the moderators. However, that doesn’t mean nothing has happened – with the latest round of Community Bug Fixes being rolled to live – although the moderators don’t know that yet :) Rupert has been helping some of our other developers with some enhancements to the Signup process, while the content writers have been working on fixing problems and working on some project work.

Jason from the Networks team:

Another busy day in the world of networks. So what has everyone been up to?

Well Josh has been doing a sterling job on the Brighview handover documentation. There’s nothing worse than having to manage a system with no documentation! Duncan has been on monitoring, making sure any issues are caught early so that they do not become customer impacting. Both Mike and Simon have been working hard on our new backup platform to ensure that we can recover quickly from any major data loss incident.

Denis has concentrated his efforts today on fixing an issue with our IWF implementation. The IWF system performs a very important role in the protection of children and Denis’ work has made sure we play our part constantly.

Matt has been drowning in a see of “tickets” but his hard graft has seen him close many. Lee has been visiting the Data centres this week planning our data centre strategy. He has also been working on the project plans for networks. And finally Kevin has done some great work to get all the data centre access in to a concise standard.

Mand from our Comms team:

Today has been a very very quiet day in Comms. We’re missing Bob as he’s off to csc.za for a couple of weeks in the sun, and Matt as he’s rota’ed off. In addition James has been with the Community Site moderator team for most of the day on their visit to PlusNet Towers.

Therefore me and Chris have been working away to cover all our usual workflows.

Chris has been working on Networks Change Controls, problems, Postini and keeping a close eye on the forums.

I’ve been working on Dev Change Controls and problems, some WLR processing, clearing out my task list ahead of the weekend, and being a stand in Bob in a couple of meetings.

James has spent most of the day with afore-mentioned moderators, discussing the future plans for the Community site and working hard as always (along with the odd game or two of GH3). ;)

Have a good weekend, it’s beer’o'clock!

Mand

Dave from Products lets us have the products update:

Today we said goodbye to a valued member of the team, Shaun is off to pastures new and we’d like to wish him all the best for the future. Good luck mate and take care. So apart from Shaun spending time handing the rest of his work over to us we’ve had a visit from the forum moderators which has taken up most of Ian’s day and the rest of us have been doing the usual as well as working out what we need to do next week that Shaun normally does.

As Dave said, we do wish Shaun well in the future.

Right, time for us to start wrapping up and head to the pub!

Breaking News:

There are reports coming in that James Bailey did indeed make the tea for members of the Moderator team, and that there is photographic evidence to prove this.

More later...

James
