It’s that time again and it’s my second stint as guest editor (it’s getting a bit regular). So we’ll start off with a well done to England for a win last night; you can always tell when there’s an England game on the box because the network is a lot quieter.
Anyway let’s get on with the show and we start today with Brad from the CSC:
Howdy guys, been quite a quick day here in the CSC today. CAR has been fantastic at 91% and we have continued to increase the amount of customer resolutions in Faults and Ticket queries.
Top 5 then:
Thanks Brad, next we have Ben from the Development team:
Today in Development we’ve got several teams working in parallel to cleanup the signup code, this will allow us to speed to up the signup process, and also improve the upgrade process.
Farhan has been working on splitting all the tasks for Brightview Phase 2 into each of the teams that will do the work. I know this sounds boring, but Farhan sounded like he was really pleased with his work today. Emily has been finishing off some improvements we’re making to the house moves tool which is rolling out tomorrow, so I’m sure it’s going to be perfect when she’s finished.
We’ve been having some heated discussions on what version control system we should be using, we’re currently using CVS, but it appears 2 camps have emerged for what we should be using, Git or Subversion. I’m sure the battles will continue. (Ed – I’m voting for Git based purely on the name.)
The rest of the developers down here have been battling Godzilla (or was that bugs) as well as the usual problems fixes.
We’ve also had a little re-jig on the floor plan, The Java team have moved to the centre of the room (I always knew the Java team thought that they were the most important part of the team) and Nigel, our platform support architect has finally joined us on the Development Floor! He’s been busy as a bee working on documenting our architecture, and planning on how to scale our platform – and now, we all get to bug him about it.
Alexandra reports on the financial happenings of the day:
Just a quick posting from the land of finance…
It’s been typically busy up here today with lots to be doing and getting on with…
Kate has closed off payroll, been processing supplier payments and completing various banking tasks, Mark J has been doing KPIs and invoices, I have been processing payments onto accounts, Andrew has been closing customer tickets, Mike and Jamie have kicked off the budgeting process for ‘08/’09 year and finally James has been working on the month end reconciliations.
May i also take this opportunity to welcome Jamie to Finance team as well! We all look forward to working with you
Networks turn now and over to Ian:
Another Day, Another EOD…
So, what have we been up to today? Our NetOps guys have been busy, as always. Tickets guys have been battling through the best, and worst, of the problems we’ve seen. Mike P has been completing the Postini migration with one hand, while fixing things with the other. Riz passed his driving test – well done! And when he got here he was working relay mail queue issues and radius auth checks. Rusty has been improving the resilience of our monitoring platform. Dunc has been our Stunt Planty today, as the real Planty is suffering in (not so) silence with Man Flu! Our sympathies are with ya mate. Adey, meanwhile, has been practising his balancing act – mainly with the DSL pipes, although I’m sure I saw a plate on a stick at lunchtime.
Meanwhile, in the wonderful world of NetDev, Denis has been preparing for some further Brightview integration work, which he’ll be doing on Monday. Josh has been doing virtually nothing – well, okay, he’s been working with virtualisation on Solaris. Gricey is slacking in London (although I’m sure he’ll say otherwise). I, on the other hand, have been rebuilding servers and contemplating the meaning of life (it’s 42), while simultaneously bottling pseudo-cosmic antimatter for sale at a resonable fee (only £5,000,000 per 50ml bottle – a steal!).
Tomorrow is another day, and there will be another EOD (unless we get hit by a major meteor/asteroid/ISS). Until then… (Ed – wasn’t that scheduled for last Monday?)
…And finally we have Darren with the Product Team update:
Another day learning “what does Shaun do?” preparing for his departure next week, the answer being “A lot!!” and several thoughts screaming “I’M DOOMED!” have been springing into mind. Rich has been working on the VoIP platform, Shaun has been passing work load over to me, and he’s also been working on usage data. I haven’t seen much of Maria today; she’s been off in several meetings about the next financial year’s prioritisations and the BT service review.
And that about wraps up another day, for those that liked Life on Mars the spin off Ashes to Ashes starts tonight on BBC1 and will be available on iPlayer to watch for those that miss it, which is kind of deliberately let’s me link in to an excellent blog from Ian and drop a hint for my own next blog which should be ready tomorrow. ‘Til then, have fun.
