Well apparently it’s Pancake Day, although no-one bothered to tell me and heading back to Hertfordshire for the evening seems a bit much just to get my Mum to cook me some. Maybe next year!
DAILY UPDATES!!
We’ll kick things off today with Emma, from the CSC:
Welcome to this afternoons top 5 from team B. Another busy day, with lots of work for us to do. We are pleased at how well our new starters are settling in, our call answer rate is brilliant and can only get better.
So here we go:
1. Router configuration: Giving customers assistance with their routers from us and ones bought from a shop. This can take anywhere between 5 – 15 minutes depending on the type of hardware.
2. Email setup: this involves us advising on how to use the web mail and the pros of using a client.
3. Sales calls: advising new and existing customers on the latest offers, now that home phone is even better this is generating lots of calls.
4. Fault updates and new faults: this seems to be authentication and no synch as these are faults that customers generally don’t have access to the Internet to raise themselves.
and finally at number 5: Hardware chasing: this appears to be much better now we have stock, and should be back to normal tomorrow.
Many thanks for reading!
Catherine’s back again, with her QA slot:
Today’s Rollout Gatekeeper has been me, so I’ve not really had the time to find out what my team mates have been doing. I’ve been scheduling, testing and rolling as fast as I reasonably can, though, and sending through some improvements (including one to do with account activation) which customers won’t be able to see first hand but should make a difference to their experience on the portal. All good stuff!
Nigel has been preparing for his next project, doing large amounts of admin and having a pub lunch.
Paul has been in close communication with his developer for his next project and enjoying the tasty salad lunch thoughtfully provided by Paul and gang.
Gavin and Gary have both gone home, being at opposite ends of two separate rollouts.
Matt R has been testing our new Ideas Tool which allows even the newest CSC member to submit an idea they think will improve the business. So far we’ve suggested we need a tea person to bring round hot buttered teacakes, and flying lessons so we can have city-wide views. I suspect they might not last past the testing stage ![]()
Matio Matt B has been helping me with problems, ably managing those problems which come in and re-assigning them as needed.
See you tomorrow!
We move onto a rather cheerful Chris from Marketing:
The marketing team has been beavering away at a variety of different things today – I’ve been reviewing the responses to last months cancellation survey (sent to all the customers who decide to leave us) and organising our ongoing press activity. The rest of the team have been busy working on a new SWFC programme ad and Tim has continued work on a new testamonials section for the website. Oh, and the newsletter archive should be live tomorrow. I’m off to Paris in the morning so it’s au revoir from me.
Now it’s Chris from my own Comms Team:
We’ve had a full complement of staff back in today, although it’s mainly been myself sat on the comms desk.
Bob has been handling network change controls and working around the forums. He’s been sat upstairs with networks all day too.
James has been around the forums, helping out George and dealing with some account specific queries.
Matt has continued rolling out some training around the CSC and also been managing problems.
Mand has catching up from her days off while working on some problems and project updates.
I’ve been feeling a little under the weather today [Ed. Aww], but still managed to keep on top of CSC queries, personal tickets and forum posts.
Cameron from Development now, practically exuding jubilance!
Today has been working on updates to cleanup the signup code. This should make it more maintainable and easier to understand.
Otherwise the Indian developers who are working with us are carrying on setting up their machines and getting to look at the codebase before they start work on a project next week. Today they have been given an introduction to the project and why its important to us. Other developers are carrying on with their work too – problem fixes and project work. Emily did her first major rollout last night which went really well. And it’s Ali’s birthday today so we gave him the traditional card and out of tune “Happy Birthday” song.
Not much more to say other than i think it’s Shrove Tuesday so BRING ON THE PANCAKES!!!
Darren gives us a nice brief Products update:
A nice day in Products, I’ve been extremely busy chasing down some hardware orders and learning a few of Shaun’s jobs, I’ve also been going through some web statistics while Tero from the Marketing team is on Holiday. Rich has been working on the VoIP platform and Shaun has been working on churn analysis, migration investigation and ad-hoc requests. This morning Ian did an Induction presentation for some new starters going through the Plusnet community and has spent the most part of the day working on future hardware solutions.
Josh updates us on all things Networky:
Today the Networks team has been preparing for a number of early morning rollouts tomorrow as well as continuing work ongoing projects, such as the postini rollout, and the day-to-day tickets and problems.
I have been doing a whole swathe of code reviews and starting some investigations into secure virtualisation on Solaris.
Pete with a Web Team Update
A really quick update from Web Development. We have been working really hard today to complete our development cycle for the new Community Site in order to put us in a position where we are ready to roll to live. After a lot of effort (mainly from Jonny & Colin to be fair) we are now in that position and confidently expect to deliver the new Community site tomorrow.
And that’s pretty much it from us. I’ll be heading home now to think about all those lovely pancakes. Mmm. Pancakes.
James
/me sings "Tomorrow... Tomorrow... It' s only a Daaay Aaaaway!"
I miss pancakes
You should've just bought some from M&S - that's all my mother does, as her pancake-making skills are... lacking.
My Mum makes the best pancakes which sadly I've missed out on the last three years!
Must tempt parents to move up north.
I'm glad this one slipped us by..... Last years pancake attempts by my girlfriend resulted in me having to repaint the kitchen ceiling. Seriously!
I forget it's pancake day every year without fail
As do I... thankfully... I don't need an excuse to make Pancakes and enjoy them year round
James > Or you could just learn to make them yourself? Lazy bugger.
Or even at a push, you could get frozen pancakes if you are desperate. But I agree with Kelly
Pfft.
Laziness FTW.
It's merely the art of resting before you get tired.
