End of Day: 29th February

February 29th, 2008 at 18:49 by Dave Tomlinson

‘Allo ‘Allo or Good Moaning as they say in certain sitcoms. It’s the end of the week and it’s also leap day or ladies day as some people call it.

Anyone out there born on this day happy birthday, they don’t come round very often, although not as rare as 30th February. More…

Coming Soon on the (not so) Big Screen!

February 29th, 2008 at 15:00 by Kelly Dorset

Half way through last year I had an idea: The Community Site needs some content, something for people to be interested in reading and checking regularly for more. I came up with the idea of ‘PlusNet TV’, where we get a bunch of people into the office, film chatting to them. We could talk about anything that was interesting and vaguely internet related: new technology, toys, problems, code and software etc. I mentioned it to Matt Grest and Ian Wild and we decided to ‘have a go’. OpenID Guerrillas Day Four.

February 29th, 2008 at 14:02 by Kelly Dorset

This week we had Mark Kacary from Cryptocard in to talk to about their managed 2 part auth services. We’ve been mulling over integrating it with a PlusNet OpenID system for a long time but have never been able to dedicate the time to progress it. The guys seemed quite enthusiastic about implementing it and were confident that it wasn’t going to be too taxing.

Online Support Roadmap for 2008

February 28th, 2008 at 17:49 by Peter Jackson

Over the past few weeks (months even!) I’ve been putting together a plan of what we (in the Web Development Department) would like to move forward with, in terms of improving the self-service convenience and self-help tools available on our http://www.plus.net/ website. We refer to such a vision as a roadmap. It gives us focus for the strategic activities we are expecting to undertake this year.

I’m a realist and I know that unexpected challenges, and conversely, opportunities, will come along and disrupt our plans. But there are things on here that we MUST deliver this year and we’ve already made a good start in the first two months of 2008.

Read on if you like.. it does go on a bit. ;-)

2008 tech predictions

February 28th, 2008 at 13:06 by Dan Kirkland

At the beginning of the year I was going to write about my technology predictions for 2008, but then feigned illness for a while and then forgot. However, PlusNet wouldn’t let me forget for too long and yesterday James threatened me with his pool cue so I thought I’d better get my act together.

My mother whole heartedly believes she has super natural powers and can predict the future (including the Lottery numbers), but unfortunately I really can’t claim to possess such a gift. After nearly 15 years of the National Lottery, my mother still can’t claim to be a millionaire so I guess her powers are not as strong as they could be either. Anyway, I’ll do my best!

How UK ISPs are charged for broadband - the cost of IPStream

February 28th, 2008 at 12:34 by Dave Tomlinson

EllacoyaAfter reading and discussing some of the comments on our recent iPlayer usage blog and the follow-up I thought that for the next topic it would probably be useful to put together a piece on how UK ISPs like PlusNet are charged for the broadband services that they provide. More…

End of Day: February 27th

February 27th, 2008 at 17:46 by James

It’s nearly the end of the day and I’m hyper.  I’m not entirely sure why.  It’s not Friday and it’s not pay day (quite!).  It must be the honour of being tonight’s editor :) Or maybe it’s just the fact that I’m still alive following yet another near death experience.  Or something.  Actually, it’s probably just the coffee.  That’s boring.  Sorry.

Sheffield Shakes

February 27th, 2008 at 01:08 by Peter Jackson

Wow! Just as I was posting to the forums the house starts shaking!  Properly shaking.. with bottles rattling off the table.. Looks like the area has been hit with a bit of an earthquake.  The local forums are already abuzz with it.  Never felt anything like it.

End of Day: 26th February

February 26th, 2008 at 19:20 by Colin Ogilvie

Today’s been Tuesday, and it’s hard to believe it’s nearly the end of February already, which (hopefully) means before too long we’ll be able to leave the office at 6PM to daylight. It also means it’s my turn in the ‘Editor’ position – perhaps I’m being punished for asking for submissions for an ‘End of File’ yesterday rather than an EOD. Thankfully, today I did manage to ask for submissions for an EOD so on with the latest round of updates…
