End of Day: January 31st

January 31st, 2008 at 17:55 by James

Oh yes.  It’s payday! We like payday.  We also like our jobs and here’s what we’ve been doing with them today!

We kick things off with Andrew in the CSC:

Here’s the round-up from the recently expanded Team B for another busy day. All those new peeps have made all the difference - 89% CAR! (Call answer rate)

  1. Router Configuration takes the top spot - customers stuck at various points in the config process. Generally opening voyager.home/192.168.1.1 or flashing DSL light due to incorrect cabling.
  2. Hardware chases - customers calling to find out when routers will be delivered following recent stock shortages.
  3. Fault chases - updates on outstanding speed/no sync/auth faults.
  4. Sales enquiries - plenty of calls for sign-up over the phone and queries about Home Phone call charges/call features. Good press on moneysavingepxert.com about BBYW Option 1 has let to quite a few people calling up for more info on this option.
  5. Wireless queries - WEP key problems mainly, users unaware that these are stored on a sticker underneath the router or typing errors.

We move onto Katya in Development:

Another busy day for me today - working on a products improvement project, it is due to come to completion by the end of next week. In addition I’m also looking after an exciting project - we are organising an Open Day event at Leeds University next month. It will take shape of half-day-long workshops consisting of talks on various technologies, practicals and presentations. Once a week myself and 6 other Developers get together to talk about the content, and at the end everyone gets their “homework”, to be worked on by the next week. We had some great ideas so far - Seb has a plan to do a presentation on “A day in the life of PlusNet Developer” with help from Content team in a humorous way, and it was good to see the entire floor showing an interest and pitching in to the “PlusQuiz” ideas.

Also, our pod is getting shuffled today - Lukasz is moving to the Live Code Support team, we’re sorry to see him go, even though he’ll be sitting at the desk next to ours! I’ll be changing the desk too so that our two new developers from India can sit with the technical wizards of the pod - Simon and Seb - and count on their support.

Another sad event - today is the last day that Danny from Live Code Support is working with us. Best wishes to him from all of us at the Dev floor - we’ll be saying our good-byes at the pub later tonight!
Now it’s the turn of Matt out of Networks:

Matt from Networks here, another busy one for everyone today (isn’t it always!). I’ve been working on Tickets, Ellacoya operational stuff and some apache config work with Ade.

Anyways thats enough from me, here’s what the rest of the Network dudes and indeed dudette have been up to today:

Ben B: Apache work along with some mail db cleanup tasks
Ade: Apache config changes and tasks
Dan P: Tickets
Carl: BV new segment, interviews, cogent transit, plusnet capacity review
Denis: Documenting Firewall migration, fixing problems
Dunc: Problems
Ian G: Server migrations
Mark L: Webmail resilience preparation work
Michael P: Housekeeping
Mike G: Working on backup storage
Richard P: Prep-work for a systems audit next week, Tickets
Rizwan S: Working on 6 problems with only two hands (Postini mail issues)
Russel M: Opsview failover work
Sarah R: Having fun with Ellacoya configuration management server
Si B: Storage work

Thats it for another day on the Networks floor :-)

Comms now, and Matthew

Wow, the return of the Matt. Not sure if I’ve missed doing these or not, but I’ve enjoyed the inter-team arguments about who’s going to write the latest one.

So what have we been up to?

I shall mention Bob first. Bob today has been writing his Postini blog (in his own words, “I’ve done nothing but write this fluffing hatstand blog all day” - not sure what he means there…)

James has been off with Products again today, learning the ways of, er, products whilst sitting cross legged under a waterfall and being beaten by a wizened hirsute old man with a bamboo stick. Or something. He’s also been managing accounts and answering forum posts, no doubt whilst balanced on one leg on a sixteen foot pole.

Chris has been fielding todays change controls, which have numbered in the billions if he’s to be believed. He’s also been the point of contact for those agents out in South Africa, and has answered several tickets and several more forum posts.

Mand has been chasing problems and has been lending a hand to the CSC with tickets and queries. She’s also been to a few workshops and is off for the next four days - not that I’m envious.

I have been writing training for the up and coming Enhanced Care option and the Monster Faults Blog has made it to wordpress as a draft - you will get to see it soon, honest guv’nor.

So it’s all go, as ever. Thanks for reading, we’ll see you tomorrow for the end of week post. w00t!

ps Bad TalkTalk. Naughty TalkTalk. No. No. NO!
So that’s it from me today.  Make sure you all wrap up warm if you’re out and about, it’s absolutely freezing tonight!

James
