End of Day: 23rd January

January 23rd, 2008 at 18:13 by Colin Ogilvie

It’s the middle of the week, and today’s been productive, despite feeling tired after taking in Sheffield Wednesday v Derby last night (the less said about that, the better I think) although it was a good night. Back in the world of work, we’ve been busy all over.

We begin the business updates with Stephen in the CSC:

  • Email verification - Due to the problem yesterday lots of customer have been changing their username/passwords trying to login, so we had a lot of calls just correcting this.
  • Router setup - Again, I seem to be repeating myself here but router setups, lots of new signups so lots of new customers needing help setting up.
  • Fault updates - some customers calling up just generally looking for an update on an outstanding fault, but no major issue is visible.
  • Intermittent sync - A fair few customers calling with this issue, usual fault checking process carried out, I don’t believe there is a major issue just an increase on the normal call levels regarding this.
  • username/password - A fair few customers calling who have lost or do not know their username/password.

Next up is Chris from Marketing:

“Another busy day in the marketing department - we’ve continued work on some promotional material for an upcoming SWFC offer, I’ve tried to keep on top of all things PR related and I’ve made a start on the first newsletter of 2008 (to be hitting your inboxes next week).

Martyn has been making sure the current referrals and free game offer pages are ready to be removed when the promotions end in the near future. I’ve also been grumpy because Sheffield Wednesday somehow contrived to lose to Derby last night!”

Catherine updates us from the world of QA:

“A busy day today with lots of meetings and going up and down the three flights of stairs to my chums in networks. The exercise is good for me! (Plus I need it after our fantastic but rather unhealthy roast chicken lunch today. Mmm…. )

I’ve been doing a bit of everything today which I’ve rather enjoyed, particularly discussing creating a ‘How we do things’ pack for new starters. There’s a lot to get your head around here when you first start so some helpful info on what to do and where the coffee machine is should be really useful. (Ed: How can you miss it on the Dev floor?)

Gavin has donned the problems hat today, with a break every now and then for some management of our testing platform.

Gary has been sharing the problems load with Gavin, helping crack down on our backlog which we’ve had since we began the Madasafish project.

Nigel has, once again, been getting his head down on some project work. In fact, I think he deserves a post in our recognition forum for all the hard work he’s been doing on some really complicated niggles.

Paul tied up some loose ends and went home early in preparation for his rollout tonight. Good luck!

Matt B has been looking at improving our house move process, not before time.

The Jabber instant messaging server turned into a sentient being and sent us all a message when it crashed telling us it was fixing itself and then rebooting. Fortunately, pod bay doors were not mentioned.”

Pete updates us on the Web Team:

“What has the web team been doing today?

I’ve been looking at a couple of problems, and whilst looking, finding more. (I always say that, whenever I look at something, I always find something wrong.. unless it’s my own work when the most glaring boo-boo often goes unnoticed.)

We’ve also had a workshop to look at improving our backend systems that maintain the automated ’system’ emails that are triggered and sent to customers at various points. We want to make it easier for our content writers to update these, since it’s quite difficult currently.

We’ve also put live the Tag Cloud that we had on beta for you to look at before Xmas. We mentioned then that we were going to add more functionality that records clicks and makes the ‘tag’ bigger the more people clicked on it (and conversely, smaller if no-one was clicking). That functionality is now built so please do take a look and see what you think. We’ll use this tag cloud in several place on our websites over the coming months.

Our designers have been beavering away on the beta Community Site fixing a few template bugs. We are still planning on rolling this new design to live next week.. fingers crossed. “

Stephen (also known as the ‘President of the Galaxy’) in Development gives us:

“Yay, I’m the lucky vict… er, I mean, One to write today’s EOD for development.

If this posting looks/reads as if it’s been rushed in being written, then you’d be correct. It’s been another really busy day - so much to do in so little time. (there’s always the weekend though, right??)

Folks are working on either fixing stuff related to the MadAsAFish phase 1 rollout, or working on the planning/development for MadAsAFish phase 2.

Me and Danny in the Live Code Support Team (there’d normally be 3 of us, but Karol’s off ill today) have been picking up various other random bits and pieces (problems, both MadAsAFish and non-MadAsAFish-related, code reviews, change controls, etc.) and trying to either get them fixed or get the fixes we’ve done tested with QA.”

Shaun from Products brings us:

“Really brief for Products: We’ve all been involved in an offsite this afternoon prioritising projects to be delivered next financial year in accordance with the company’s vision and roadmap. Other bits and pieces include investigating and resolving hardware problems, churn analysis, supplier meetings, and getting ready for Ian departing for a few days to Berlin.”

That’s it for today,

Colin

I tried to follow the link to 'tag cloud', to find out what it meant. I am afraid I just got completely puzzled.
Please what is a 'tag' ??
Perhaps the word cloud is appropriate, is it me that is clouded by the jargon, or is it someone whose head is in the clouds?
Why is it that when I try to get some information, I am always bedazzled by this continual use of words and phrases which do not mean very much to a non technical person. I am sorry I am thick but I don't understand you.

To be honest, 'tag cloud' isn't really particularly inaccessible jargon about computers, so you might've been looking for something more complicated than it actually is. A 'tag' is, like in real life, a short description used to describe something - in this case, it's a word or two used to describe support articles. (For a very simple example, an article about fixing broadband faults might have the tags 'broadband' and 'faults'.) 'Cloud' then just refers to having a mass of the tags together in one big, well, cloud.

There is one 'techy' aspect to this though which I suppose I should mention: the idea behind it is that more popular tags (i.e. tags used to tag a larger number of support articles) are made more prominent in the cloud; in this case it means they appear in a larger font size.

Thanks Be3G. that's a fine explanation. Basically, it's a visual depiction of relevant content, where the importance or popularity of a particular topic is shown by font size. In our case each support page may be 'tagged' with one or more words; such as 'broadband' or 'router' for example. It's another way for us to try to make navigation to our help pages a bit more user-friendly.

Tag clouds are used on many websites these days; a good example being Flickr.

Wikipedia has a good explanation about how tag clouds work here:

There's always one... ;-) I just meant the pack should cover the 'softer' aspects of working here as well as the tools needed to do the job.
