End of Day: 3rd January

January 3rd, 2008 at 18:09 by Colin Ogilvie

It’s my first End of Day of the New Year, and I’m completely confused as to what day of the week it is – so welcome to Tuesday Thursday’s End of Day.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year and are ready for whatever 2008 has in store for all of us.

We begin the End of Day with Catherine from the QA department:

“Hello again….what have we been up to today? I’ve been rattling through some niggly content and minor code changes, which is always good.

Paul has had a day off from managing the rollouts process and has loved it! He’s finally had a chance to get some work done on his latest testplan.

Gavin and I have been working with one of our developers to investigate automating the refreshes of our testing platform. This would make our lives soooooo much easier, so fingers crossed that everything goes well and this work succeeds.

Matt B has been sitting quietly at the end of the table, plugged into his music player and plugging away at the problems. Apparently, Tubular Bells 2 has been the secret of his success.

Matt R has been eating bacon butties, testing various code problems and once more managing the remaining Madasafish work.

Finally, someone called Gary has come back after his Christmas break and has managed the whole day with no Nik Naks. Where’s the real Gary?”

James from the Comms team, who were told not to mention Tea, bring us:

“Hello everyone!

Here’s in Comms we’re all very hopeful thaT our EOD acTually geTs published withouT being heavily ediTed This Time! When we haven’T been shivering in The silly norThern weaTher, here’s whaT we have been doing:

James – I’ve been mainly keeping myself busy in The forums as well as making a blog posT abouT our Referrals Mini ProjecT looking aT some personal TickeTs and also doing some accounT managemenT work.

MaTT – He’s been helping ouT some of The faulTs analysTs This afTernoon as well as doing his usual forum work along wiTh looking aT some of our problems raised inTernally.

Chris – He’s been looking aT our forums, making some service sTaTus posTings, some change conTrols and a meeTing or Two.

Bob – He’s mainly been looking inTo The forums and caTching up wiTh some of The PosTini issues That our cusTomers are seeing on our spam Trial. He’s also been looking inTo some price changes That we’re considering on our PAYH plaTform.

Mand – As usual she’s been mainly handling our inTernal problem process as well as geTTing very exciTed abouT The Referrals Mini ProjecT (as has Mark). She’s also posTed a biT in The forums as well as helping To Train some of our newer sTarters on The Provisioning Team.

So ThaT’s iT from us. Did I menTion that iT was cold?

IT’s cold.

James”

The Web Team update comes from Rupert:

“Happy New Year, everybody! I hope everybody had a splendiferous winter break and the cold weather isn’t causing too many blues out there. Today we finally got the updates to ‘Current Referrals’ page in the Member Centre rolled out, which is great news for those customers who recommend their friends to PlusNet as it allows them to more properly assess the discounts they are getting for them signing up and staying with us! Others in the department have been:

- Duffy has been doing general Support Page and E-mail updates
- Colin has been mainly code-reviewing all the work I’ve done today, and working on updates for the Collunity (Ed: OI) Site
- Sam has been fighting with grammatical errors in certain areas of the portal and E-mails
- Dan has been fixing random bugs and problems, and chasing other people to get things done!
- Grzegorz has been making great progress on the Community Site updates
- Pirate Pete has been cracking the whip!”

Darren from Products brings us this update:

“Almost everyone here today, Maria was working from home and Shaun was ill (bless him), get better soon Shaun. I also haven’t seen much of Ian; he’s been busy working on various projects and meeting some visitors.

Dave’s been working on updating the DSL pipe forecast as well as working on his next blog. Rich has been working on VoIP related tickets, working on other major projects within the business, planning work for the next couple of months and of course there are always plenty of meetings.

I’ve been working on a new report for MAAF, chasing up some hardware issues, working on MAC key reporting and doing the weekly Max upgrades.”

Marketing give us their update via Martyn:

“Everyone in the marketing team is back in the office now, and Nick has even got his Christmas jumper on. Today’s big news is that we’ve launched some improvements to the way you view information about your referrals. It should now be much easier to keep track of who you have referred and how much you’re earning – see the improvements by visiting the My Referrals pages.

We’ve also been pulling together the cancellation survey from December, which gives us an idea of the reasons why people are leaving us. Chris has also been reviewing the impact of recent PR, some of which you can see here – here

James from the Business Support team brings us an update:

“We have been filling up on my Grandmas homemade Christmas cake so feeling really full now, but tops marks to Grandma as it was very very tasty.

We have all been very busy today continuing to deal with our customers returning after their Christmas breaks and raising a variety of requests for the New Year.

We have had a few IP block requests today so it seems like quite a few companies are upscaling their infrastructure and networks which from our perspective is fantastic that they are doing this and have the confidence in our network to do it with us.

Also quite a lot of new provisions going through too either for brand new offices or people relocating so its all abuzz with that.

We have a new colleague in business support who joined us yesterday so everyone should welcome John who has moved over from his normal residency in the main CSC support area. so we are busy utilising his faults skills to progress any faults we may have as well as can be.

Anyway we still have a couple of tickets to reply too to keep on top of our business targets so Im off to do them before I leave to go shopping at 6.”

and finally, with a late entry, Josh from Networks:

“Well, my first day back after the Christmas break and I have survived. I have been working on our backup solution again, with some side work to improve our internal mail platform.

The rest of the department has been working through the usual as well as concentrating on the ongoing Postini trial and spam in general. We also upgraded the software on our RADIUS (dsl/dial authentication) and mail storage platforms.

Throw in continued work on the Mad as a Fish integration and that about covers it.

Early this morning we also decommissioned the oldest (and now unused) dial racks in the world … roll on the viking funeral!”
