EOD: Xmas Eve Special Edtn. Director’s Cut

December 24th, 2007 at 14:04 by Peter Jackson

PlusNet Towers on Christmas Eve and the snow is falling gently. Bob’s chestnuts are roasting in front of the log fire and James is hanging up his stockings. The network elves are busy making sure we all can hit those online sales big-time from midnight tonight. Santa’s little helpers will also be manning the support centre over Xmas. They’ll make sure that you get the help you need if you’ve got any problems or questions over the holidays.

But it is Christmas and no-one’s invited me to the Ball (aww!) And look, it’s not fair.. the Ugly Sisters in Comms are getting all dressed up.

But first we’ll call in on the CSC. Tell us Robert, who is the fairest in all the land?

No talking mirrors or funny business with apples here. And it feels more like a Saturday than a Monday with it being Xmas Eve. Here’re the top issues for today..

  1. Provisioning updates - some lucky customers have been getting their broadband early for Christmas.
  2. Hardware setup - the lucky people who got their broadband sometimes need a bit of help to set up the router.
  3. Spam - darn them nasty spam elves.
  4. Logged Faults Updates - looks like Scrooge has been getting into the system and causing Christmas gremlins for some users, our hardworking Faults agents have been chasing him out with some Christmassy blunt instruments.
  5. Email - offering a helping to customers who have problems sending/receiving/configuring their emails.

Ugly Sister Bob in drag Comms, your very words are poetry to my ears:

“Fee! Fie! Foe! Fum!
I smell a rant in another for-um!
Be his profile from BT, at 160 it’s stayed
So I’ll don my flame-proofs and rush to his aid”

‘Twas the day before Christmas, and all the Comms guys,
Were out of the office munching mince pies

All but one, mug of tea in his paw,
It’s Bob of course on the CSC floor!

Mail platform’s in check, Service Status is Green,
The rest of the Comms team aren’t here being mean!

No silly Santa hat am I having to wear,
No wrapping paper, baubles or bows on my chair!

The halls are all decked with plenty of holly,
An end of day without tea-making folly!

Shopping is done, my presents are tagged,
I’m a CS-Source wizard and never get fragged!

My Phone’s left un-tampered, desk all to myself,
No flash animations of me as an elf!

Hold on, it’s just me; no-one else is in sight,
I think that it’s time that I put up a fight!

They’ll know it was me, will only take them a tick,
But not if I blame it on good ol’ Saint Nick

(Just what is Bob up to? I guess we’ll have to wait to find out - Ed)

Mike from Networks, my, what a big mouth you have..

Hello again, its the Big Bad Wolf…er Gricey again with the Networks update. A lot of us will be off for a while starting later today so we’re chomping at the bit.

Mike P, and Ben B have been talking about moving our staging environment into a more stable environment, like a gingerbread house, oo-er!

Sarah and I are giving operations handover training to some more of our Operations elves so that they can support the new IWF system without waking up Father Christmas.

Look behind you! Dunc and Adey are working problems, monitoring our systems and making their list … they know if you’ve been naughty or nice.

Jack and Jill, I mean Dan and Matt, are busy asking our customers what they want for Christmas while doing tickets.

Finally, the Widow Twanky of Networks, Simon, is replacing hardware on some various items around one of the Sheffield data centre.

Having wrapped up nearly ever panto cliche (oh no I haven’t!) I’ll leave you in the Editor’s capable hands and wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year from all in Networks; we’ll be having a festive sherry for you all.

Ho ho ho!

Daddy QA Bear Kelly D; who’s been sitting in my chair?:

Just us three bears down in QA today, and no sign of that nasty Goldilocks yet.

Mother Bear Gavin is giving the portal a good run through to make sure everything is working before we disappear off for Christmas.

Baby Bear Paul is trying to get a whole bunch of content changes tested. He’s also not allowed to leave today till he’s finished his porridge.

..and myself? I’m frantically trying to figure out what to buy my mother for Christmas!

Darren in Products, have you decided who’s going to be the hind-end of the pantomime cow yet?

We wish you Merry Christmas, We wish you a Merry.. Well you know the rest.

Poor me, I was all alone today as the ugly sisters (Shaun and Rich) (more ugly sisters! shudder - Ed) had abandoned me for annual leave. I’ve been very busy with Monday reports and covering work for Shaun. Who will rescue me from this abandonment? And *POOF*!!! As if by magic, my Fairy Godfather (Ian) showed up to spread some Christmas spirit (aka. making coffee).

Have a Great Christmas Everyone.

Jack, I mean Martyn in Marketing, What have you managed to trade in for your milk-cow on eBay?:

Having traded in a cow for 5 magic beans on the way to work this morning, I’m feeling a little bit cheated - the beans haven’t grown into a giant beanstalk yet.

Today I’ve been working on the Broadband Your Way journey improvements. I’ve seen the project in a new light and I now think that we should help customers choose the right product by leaving a trail of breadcrumbs through the forest, leading towards Broadband Your Way Pro. Or maybe we should have hyperlinks paved with gold, I just can’t decide.

I’ve also been working on a mini-site that we’ll be launching in the New Year (oh yes we will!). The rest of the Marketing team are on leave today, and that’s all from us until Thursday. Hopefully these stupid beans will have grown into something more exciting by then.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Cameron in Development, he’s behind you:

Hello Boys and Girls!!

I said HELLO BOYS AND GIRLS!!

Unfortunately Craig from Big Brother was meant to be here today but has had to drop out so I am covering for him in today’s Development pantomime! Good job I wore my Cinderella outfit, usually save that for the weekend (you can’t be Cinderella as well.. you’ll just have to be Snow White! - Ed).

Talking of pantomime our department was lucky enough to go to the executive box to watch Sheffield Wednesday’s match on Saturday. It’s a great day out, good food, good drink, good company and erm, Sheffield Wednesday playing football! I think Watford must have been very good boys judging by the gift they were given by the Wednesday defence. Anyway boys and girls, we are working hard (oh yes we are), on supporting our recent releases and looking to get things ready for the New Year to apply the updates to our platform.

We have a code-freeze on over the festive period (oh yes we do!) so whilst that is on, as we’ve done in the past (it’s behind you!), we’re focusing on fixing any issues and planning for when the freeze is lifted.Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We’re going to take a break from the EODs until after Xmas now. I’d like to leave by wishing you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and best wishes from all of us for the holiday season, whatever your faith.

Rofl at that photo - and it’s not a bad Photoshopping job at all either. And I’m impressed by Bob’s poetry skills. :)

The best EOD ever! :-)

I LOVE that photo… You all look so dashing!

pcoventry

I can’t get over the image of james.

Colin

Excellent… well done Pete :D

Chris

OK, what have you done Bob? You know you’ll regret whatever it is!!

orbrey

Damn, I’m looking fine. Glad to see I’ve kept my figure. Sexiest ugly sister I ever saw.

Though I’m slightly scared about going in in the morning, and being all on my own to deal with Bob’s smirking revenge….

James

Bob never getting fragged makes me question the validity of this entire EoD.

Chris

Hmm, desk appears to be in one piece, nothing appears to have been done yet.

*wonders if Bob actually did anything or if it was an empty threat*

orbrey

Yeah, that worries me too. I suspect we’ll find out.
