It’s Friday, and the end of what’s been a busy week at PlusNet.
We’ve had Halloween this week, the Home Phone Refresh has rolled and the Critical Path rollout has been on going throughout the week.
Ben updates us from Development:
“It’s been a few months since I last did an EOD for the community site – The last one being just a couple of weeks after I started working in Development… And boy does time fly here! Already I am at the end of my ‘probation’ period – I am pleased (and relieved) to hear that the powers that be are happy with what I have been up to for the past three months and as of 6pm today I will actually be a bona-fide plusnetter!
This past week I have been supporting the shiny new rollout system that we have put in place to keep all the live servers that host… well… everything… in (relatively) perfect synchronisation with each other. As with all new things, there are always teething problems – but this really is quite a nice setup – so when it’s all bedded in and stable it will be great. But for now, I have to deal with it’s occasional hiccups while also trying to get on with the growing pile of ‘other things’(tm) that I need to do.
One thing that it does highlight though is the number of different rollouts that actually happen on the live servers on a daily basis. So far today, I see nine individual changes (problem fixes, content changes and new functionality) – including one at ten past four in the morning – to various parts of our system… and all them with virtually no downtime!
The other main development project I am working on is with a team of remote developers, to deliver a brand new SMS platform that will allow you use text messages on your mobile phone to add comments to questions that you have open on your account… Just another little thing to help improve how we as your ISP can keep in touch with you all! So watch this space!

Chris delivers the Comms Team update today:
“Matt’s been a jack of all trades today, dipping in and out of a number of areas including the forums and updating the CSC teams in their weekly meetings.
Mand has been working on some personal tickets, keeping an eye on problems and having a few rollout meetings for upcoming projects.
James was around in the forums for the half-day that he was actually here!
Bob has been upstairs chasing networks about the email problems of today and making sure updates were given, he’s also been keeping a watchful eye on the Critical Path trial.
I’ve been around in the forums while also keeping an eye on the Critical Path trial to make sure it continues as it should.
Have a good weekend and we’ll see you next week.”
With Marketing’s Friday update, it’s Martyn:
“What a week it’s been. We’ve enjoyed the launch of the £9.99 Home Phone product, spooky Halloween fun and a whole load of other stuff.
Two team members are on leave today, so the team is looking a little depleted, but we’ve ploughed on with our work. Our web analyst has been particularly busy with our affiliate marketing campaign, while we’ve also been getting our crystal ball out and scheduling our work for the next few months – we’ve certainly got a lot to do! We’ve also been working on emails and promotional landing pages, while looking forward to the weekend ahead.”
Darren updates us on the activities of the Product’s team today:
“It’s Friday YAY!! I have been feeling ill all week so I finally get to rest and preserve some energy. Today has been the typical end to a week, with lots of issues getting resolved. Today I continued to chase up a Hardware issue, chased BT about an issue which affected Upgrading customers to MaxDSL products, made some changes to a few of the Product best practices and continued research of future hardware. I also made a quick trip to University and saw my bank balance disappear, those darn tuition fees!!!
Today Shaun attended the Weekly Operations Meeting, he also continued work on churn analysis, started the monthly usage analysis and project discussions.
Rich has continued to work on the VoIP platform, this includes; further roadmap work, going through reporting requirements with Shaun and the CSC, sign off manual processes with CSC and instigating talks with marking and BA. Rich also managed to get Finance to sign off on an upcoming item – good to go and the prototype pages signed off.”
Jen from Finance:
“Another end of a busy week in the Finance team at PlusNet!!!
We are three people down again (two with sickness and one on their hols) although we still managed to close 89 tickets between us!!
Mark B, James and Mark J have been busy with month end activities, and the rest of us have been busy with other tasks such as cheque processing etc. Although we have all been looking forward to the weekend
“
And finally, Emma updates us from the CSC:
“Today has been very steady, quite a few sales calls.
1. Email setup – including configuration for clients, webmail and mailboxes.
2. Router setup – a fair few customers resetting pc’s not realising that routers store the information, some older modems that needed configuring
3. Fault updates – Customers checking up on faults, raising new faults, updating us with information
4. Billing – Customers calling re failed billing again, the messages that failed billing are leaving seem to be helping
5. Provisioning updates – Customers moving house, finding out about moving, cost incurred etc”
So, that’s it for the week at PlusNet. I hope everyone has a good weekend, and we’ll see you all on Monday.
Colin
