End of Day 26th October

October 26th, 2007 at 17:52 by Colin Ogilvie

It’s finally Friday - it’s been a busy old week at PlusNet. We’ve started our Halloween Preparations now, and we’re looking for feedback and what you’ll be doing in our forums.

We’ll start off with Shaun from Products:

Well, Darren came in first thing, but bless him, he wasn’t well, so we sent him home before lunch! (Ed: Hope your feeling better!) So, you’ll have to make do with me making the EOD up (sorry, compiling the ramblings and workload of our busy dept ;) )

Rich has had a productive day with VoIP, creating email content & dataset for an 0845/VoIP survey, this is awaiting sign off and is due to be sent next Thursday. And as well as this, he’s done other various bits and bobs to do with VoIP. Exciting times ahead!!

Tommo has had a number of meetings today, he’s done some tickets, and also kept an eye on the network, ensuring our customers get the best experience by making sure everything is working as it should do. This includes looking at some speed issues and proposals. He’s also written the latest blog (see the Community site later on today for a damn good read of changing usage habits). And, if he hadn’t already done enough, he’s managed to work on some virus detection and identification methods and has contacted customers that appear to be infected with a virus (I’m sure there’ll be another blog on this soon!!)

Ian has been covering for Maria in management meetings, working on improvements to a number of the value add services we provide, reviewing our plans for a reseller product, talking to a representative of the music industry about P2P and legal download alternatives and working with Finance on options for a couple of our Metronet products to make them a bit more compelling. And he’s also learnt that the “random” function of his ipod can be changed so that a song is more or less likely to be played again. This then led to a discussion about probability and whether the results of something random can be “fixed” to give results within certain parameters (e.g. weighted dice).

Finally, I (Shaun) have been attending lots of meetings (security, bonus scheme, weekly operations meet), as well as looking at churn in further detail, starting to look at referrals and customer propensity to refer. I’ve also been attempting to do some Yorkshire accents, but I’m not sure how successful they’ve been!

If you’re read this far, you’ve done very well, and we hope that you all have a great weekend

Lee from Networks:

Another very busy week for Networks this week.Work has been ongoing in preparation for the anti-spam trial which will be gradually going live from Tuesday next week. We hope that this will deliver benefits immediately for everyone on our email platform.

Completion of a consolidation and migration for one of our London data centre suites which has meant many, many long hours throughout the night over many many weeks has completed this week and has been very successful. Very proud of everyone involved here - get some rest Lads!

We’ve also completed some core router changes which has decreased the load in one of the Sheffield data centres.

Alongside this we have many more activities going on behind the scenes for the future and to keep our stuff here and now running well.

Chris from Marketing:

Another busy day in Marketing as 2 of the team are still down in London town. I’ve sent the business newsletter and dealt with a few different incoming press enquiries. I’ve also been working on a new PlusNet press pack to send out with press releases.

The team has been looking at some potential page updates - The BBYW Pro and business pages in particular.

We’ve also been updating the CSC on referrals and sales information.

Oh.. and I beat Chris ‘Where’s my Tea’ Parr very very comfortably at pool :)

Matt from Comms:

Well I’m out of touch after a few days off with the lurgy, but have been brought back into the swing of things with several meetings and updates and also a presentation or two to our Customer Support teams.

Chris has been up with Networks fielding their change controls, and has been playing very bad pool - Marketings Mr Cotterill is now only one week behind (don’t ask me what the scoring system is, I don’t know and am not sure I want to). Bob has been writing a lot - plans for the new VoIP platform and all the related internal and external communications required, the Comms Wiki site, and also the usual coverage of forums and usenet groups.

Mand has had a hectic day and had to shoot off early due to an ill daughter (we hope she’s all right Mand) though has still kept up a forum and workplace presence, and James has been catching up on forums and personal tickets when he hasn’t been in his many, many project meetings.

James from Finance:

Friday marks the end of another very busy week in the department.

Today we have managed to close 168 tickets, totalling a massive 770 for the week. So that’s a pat on the back for the team but in particular Kate, Jen, Mark and Nick for all their effort.

Mike and Magda have been working on the strat plan and the end is now in sight, which I think they are pleased about!

So that is it for another week in finance, hope you all have a good weekend.

Nick from the Web Team:

It’s been a busy end to what’s felt like a long week (is it the cold, dark weather perhaps?) for the Web Team as usual. However, with a shiny new weekend in sight and a move to a the 2nd floor over the weekend to look forward to, the mood has been upbeat and productive.

Today our guys have been working on referral system improvements, hammering out problem fixes, tweaking the insides of our GoogleMini search tool and project work - which has meant several meetings with other departments. It’s always great to see a real collaborative effort from around the business at PlusNet!

Well that’s it from the Web Team. Enjoy the weekend everyone - and don’t forget to put your clocks back on Saturday night!

Karen from Development:

Well its Friday! So What’s been happening in Development

- we have had a huge push on some major upcoming projects - Dan laid down the gauntlet and got the guys to challenge him, he said he would get them whatever food the guys wanted to keep them

going while working late - he failed on the Banana & Sushi pizza……
- We have closed a couple of projects - Brand Consolidation and Broadband Your Way Pro
- We have fixed a bunch of problems
- We have made lots of progress with the projects that are currently being delivered by our remote development team in India. We have some of the guys on site this week from India to work on the technical design for a project and introduce them to the unique Plusnet culture and of course Sheffield!!!
- we have made some fixes to the software that is used for our code rollouts
- we have made more changes to our framework

So all in all a very busy week here in Development and I would like to say a massive thank-you to everyone for the hard work. We are all going out on a team night out tonight its always good to chill out after such busy week!!!

and finally, John from the CSC:

CSC Update

Today the Top 5 Issues for contacting the CSC have been:

1. Existing Faults 23% - We have a steady influx of people requesting updates on faults already raised.

2. prov delays 23% - Problems with house move tool and delayed migrations have caused have caused many customer to query their activations

3. Router Config 21% - New routers, needing confirmation of the settings needed for the new equipment

4. Sales queries 18% - We have a good number of people calling us and asking about the current packages.

5. New Faults 15% - There is a flow of people having connection issues (this is a mixture of existing customers and new connections)

And with the computers packed up for the Web Team, Marketing and Products Desk Move, I need to sign off… or I’m going to miss my train!

Enjoy the Weekend,
Colin (and the rest of the PlusNet Team)

Colin
