I’ve been looking through Google to try and find out if there was anything particularly exciting that happened today in years gone by, but it appears that October 17th for every day in known history has been somewhat dull. But not here at PlusNet! Oh no! We’ve all been really busy again, apart from Products who spent half a day offsite (only kidding Maria et al!).
Bradders is back for the CSC update:
Here are the top 5 reasons for contacting the CSC today:
1. Existing Faults 10% – Customers being asked to ring in or check online.
2. Router Config 10% – New routers. Often not putting in all the correct settings e.g. encapsulation and multiplexing.
3. Failed Billing 5% – Visa Electron not being accepted which is being worked on internally.
4. New Faults 5% – No pattern and more loss of connection loss than speed issues
5. Email Config 5% – New mailboxes, not putting in username+mailbox
Next, we have Katerina, from development:
Another busy day on the development floor. We now have settled down in our new desks – as well as the floor move some of the teams got reorganised and everyone’s getting used to new places and colleagues. That makes a life a little easier for new starters as they’re not the only ones looking confused!
Emily has finally finished working on the project that kept her pretty busy over the last week and is now happy to have it up and running on the portal. This was the first project to be rolled out using our new procedure, and after a few expected hickups (and noble efforts from Life Code Support team) its now back to smooth sailing. Well done guys!
Other members of Farhan’s team are busy with fine-tuning our internal Framework, as well as working on improving mail cleanup scripts, and writing documentation – not the most loved job by programmers’ standards
Cameron’s team’s been hard at work on internal projects – they’ve been working hard to keep on schedule and have today reached an important milestone. Good going guys!
This week we had another new starter Ryszard (good good, we’re never short of work here!). He’s well on his way with going through the training log tasks; Lucasz is staying on-hand for him today, as well as looking at some issues with the Broadband Usage Controller.
For the last couple of days I’ve been working on improving the upgrade process for our dial-up customers. The changes are now in testing – hopefully I’ll get them rolled out before the end of the week.
Thats all for now from the Development!
A rather uncharacteristically quiet and flustered Darren (trying to fit a days work into 4 hours!) from Products:
Today Products had a very productive day offsite [ed. Told you!]. We spent all morning at the Sheffield Wednesday ground setting our Q3 objectives and discussing future project plans. Besides that, we have been trying to catch up with our daily tasks.
Mike now, in Finance:
Well another day another illness in finance, but at least Mark is back, although still sniffling [ed. Along with half of the company!].
James has spent the day working on intercompany reconciliations, exciting hey!!! The rest of the team has continued answering customer tickets closing 208 today, and other ad hoc tasks.
Magda and I continued our work on the strat plan, and Niki has continued her project work but most of all planning for PlusNet’s pink Friday in aid of Breast Cancer.
Chris, from Marketing:
I’ve returned from 2 days off with the dreaded lurgy and have been thrust straight back into the thick of things – I’ve been working on some press enquiries and preparing things for this weekend’s LAN party. I’ve also been working on the PR for our ‘In The Pink’ day on Friday.
Elsewhere in the department we’ve been looking at the business sales journey and putting together some prototypes of new ideas and the management team have been busy talking strategy and planning targets for the next quarter and beyond!
Comms de Matt:
Well today has been a day of blue bums and no mistake. Bob has been upstairs with networks for the whole day sorting out the blasted Radius replication issues – no mean feat. Chris has been tying things together for Saturday’s LAN party as well as ensuring that change controls are picked up. Mand is unfortunately still under the weather, and I myself have been learning that Comms updates in team meetings are a lot more demanding than I’d thought. I’ve also been blogging about pink day (read here soon) and as ever popping up and down in various fora. James meanwhile has been editing this EoD, dealing with personal tickets and forums, planning for some project work as well as handling a couple of referrer issues.
That’s pretty much it from me again. Just because that history dictates that today should be a dull day, doesn’t neccessarily mean that it has to be
Enjoy your evenings and I’ll be back tomorrow.
James
Not impressed by your check on what happened this day in history. Hatfield rail crash leading to death of 4 people and Railtrack (2000). Loma Prieta earthquake in San Francisco Bay area - 40 people crushed in their cars when double decker Cypress Viaduct freeway collapsed (1989). The musical Hair opened on Broadway (1967). Huey, Dewey and Louie (Duck) first appear in a newspaper comic strip (1937) to move away from the depressing.
BobP
Your right its depressing, dosen't mean we have to dwell on it though
Bob - I checked on Wikipedia. Didn't mention any of the above. Interestingly enough, at the time of the Hatfield train crash, I was working literally 500 yards away.
That's wierd James. I've just checked on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_17 and all of the 4 I mentioned are there. We must have different Wikipedias. I have a collection of old diaries with these sorts of things. I see that tomorrow is the anniversary of the finding of the largest gold nugget ever found - Hill End NSW 1872
BobP
Bob,
You are absolutely correct. I merely missed it. Which was weird given that I scanned the list about 3 times!
Here at Plusnet we're always trying to use clever open source things to make our lives easier. Sometimes we write our own and make other people's lives easier too!
