End of Day: 20th September

September 20th, 2007 at 19:10 by Colin Ogilvie

We’re all sick as a parrot after Talk Like a Pirate Day, but at least we’re back to normality today..

We’re all extremely delighted with the successful launch of Broadband Your Way Pro yesterday and look forward to welcoming customers on to the product. Now, on to the departmental updates.

Nick from the Web Team provides the first update today:

The team have worked on creating new tools for helping our support staff, fixing problems as well as making a number of support page changes which are now in various stages of testing. These include the Top 30 best/worst pages, Broadband Phone articles, and the Reporting Spam Email page has now been updated to include information about FastForward – a plug-in that one of our own customers has developed! (See the thread at http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php?topic=1179.45). It’s a great idea, so it was definitely worth mentioning.

There’s also been plenty of focus today on several forthcoming projects. This has meant a lot of collaborative work between the design and content chaps, so as usual the floor has been a hive of activity.

Matt from the Development Team provides an update on what he’s been doing to help the Production and Content team:

You may or may not be aware, from our problems published to the portal, but our internal content management system has had its fair share of problems recently. So, I have spent the best part of 2 weeks giving it some TLC.

The Content Management System, as you may guess, looks after all the content that makes up the PlusNet portal. It is responsible for editing it, storing it and publishing it to the live servers.

Our aim is to provide our web designers with a more reliable and easy to use Content Management System. The work has involved removing obsolete code, fixing some known issues and upgrading libraries to latest versions. As well as this we are going to implement a completely new publishing procedure, which Dmitry mentioned in his EOD on 18th Sept. This will provide us with a standard way of publishing code or content to our live platform.

A recent starter, Rick from the Networks Team provides us with:

I’m Rick and I’m a relative newcomer to the Plusnet family, having been here only 3 months. I work in the Ticket Team within Network Operations and am one of the people responsible for answering questions and resolving problems requiring more in-depth work than the CSC provide.

My days are spent rooting through server and network configurations debugging issues with all of the normal day-to-day services our customers use; domains, email, web hosting, web browsing, internet telephony and encrypted office connections. To add even more variety to the mix I also get to work on the odd juicy internal problem or two.

Today I have been working on tracing-back issues with email delivery caused by mis-configured remote systems but which initially looked to be caused by our systems. I’ve also resolved separate issues with VPNs and web hosting not working due to software not working how customers expected it to. The most recent issue I worked on turned out to be caused by a database issue here, but which was hard to track down due to the fact that we’ve only got one customer with this
particular setup and nobody else had tried this combination of features before.

With days like this (and yesterday’s pirates shenanigan’s) it’s easy to say that I can’t remember the last time I had a boring day here at Plusnet!

Chris has today’s Marketing update:

Back to business as usual today after the hectic launch of BBYW Pro yesterday. We’ve been working on an email and some external advertising for the new package for a good chunk of time today - we’ve also reviewed our referrals summer promotion and done some further planning for our partner programme.

I’ve been working on our Facebook presence (I’ll be writing a blog post about this soon) and our Creative Lead nearly pulled his own head off when he got up with his headphones still connected to his PC (Ed’s note: Not a good idea… we need him!)!

Our CSC correspondnat today is Annette:

In the CSC today, it has been another busy day, the top issues we have had today are a mix between fault updates and router configuration queries. We have also seen an uplift in the amount of sales calls we have recieved aswell. This may well be due to the new gaming product.

In the provisoning department it has been another busy day with lots of house moves and also home phone moves - we think may be because of the time of year and lots of people are moving home.

Mark updates us on Finance today:

Today we have cleared 57 customer tickets, with only 4 remaining in the pool. We aim to clear these before we leave.

Other than that, Kate has continued with payroll, Fiona has been organising letters to customers with expired cards stored on their account.

We have also been making some bank payments to suppliers.

Comms comes from Chris (no, not the same one as Marketing)
Chris here from the good ship comms (Ed: Enough with the Pirate talk, please). Well today has been another busy one! James has spent his time answering queries in the forums on top of continuing to look at the referrals model. Mand has been chasing problems and answering lots of home phone questions again, she even managed to make us all a cuppa this afternoon. Bob has been sat up with networks again keeping tabs on the changes we made to the email platform and how this is affecting our customers. I’ve been getting my head around some of the training material on our email system now that the Manage my Mail tool has been revamped, I’ve also continued pushing the gaming servers and answering questions on BBYW Pro in various places.

Last, but by no means least, we have Products and information from Ian:

We’ve been so busy this week we’ve not given you nearly enough EOD goodness from products. Apologies for that. Today has been all about:

- Not mentioning pirates or speaking like them at all. (Ed: Good…)

- Placing the outstanding MAX orders and solving some problems that occurred with the system that progresses them.

- Resolving a problem with one of the ADSL speed profiles that was affecting about 60 customers.

- Progressing our Voip plan - Looking very promising still!

- Also writing up notes and sharing lots of competitor and industry information gathered over the last few days.

Colin
