End of Day 31st August

August 31st, 2007 at 18:52 by Peter Jackson

We were talking in the office today about some of the reasons why the Internet took off in the way it did. For us old timers, it seems odd now to think back on how we had to explain the positive benefits of going ‘online’. Of course it was ultimately the popularity of broadband and the social pervasiveness of sites like Google, Amazon and eBay that brought the Internet to the mass market.  For me though, back in late 1996, it was the new fangled worldwide web that was the draw.. I’d read ‘Neuromancer‘ some 10 years previously and was captivated by the interconnectedness of ‘websites’.  We were wondering though.. what was it that first made you think ‘I’ve got to get Internet’?

Customer Support Centre:  In the CSC today we have been continuing with our recruitment drive. Anyone out there interested in a support role please go to our Careers page to find out more.

We also say goodbye today to Josh, one of our agents who is leaving us to become a teacher. Some of the team will be saying goodbye around town this evening… Sheffield, you have been warned.

Top reasons today for calling the CSC have been:

  1. Fault updates after we have contacted the customer via SMS - 25%
  2. Setting up new connections or new routers (including email) 20%
  3. Sales - sign ups and questions - 15%
  4. Provisioning Updates - Customers calling for provisioning updates or regarding delays - 15%
  5. Fault Diagnostics - Running standard diagnostics and raising new faults - 10%
    Other misc issues - 15%

Networks:  Glad to see the back of August… and looking forward to a stable and productive September.   Ticket and Problem Management will remain our operational focus along with Capacity Management across all Services. We’ll be updating our technical documentation and moving over a lot of our internal techie guidelines to a new wiki-based platform. We do strive for a stable services and network platform for our customers.

Development: (Paul Neale writes) “It’s been a very busy week for me this week as the sole Dev Team Manager! Thankfully Graeme is back next week and I’ll try and convince him to say hello and post an EOD from his point of view.

Most of my time has been taken up by recruitment, and the impact of it. We’re now hiring for Java developers, as well as PHP, and I am quickly running out of desk space -which is a great problem to have! It means we’re making good progress (which is largely thanks to Graeme & Kelly’s hard work).

I’ve got two new starters on Monday, and at least one more developer and Project Manager two weeks later. Where I will manage to sit the latter will be a challenge for next week… when Graeme is back!”

Product:  Also saying goodbye today, to the very lovely Amy, one of our placement students who leaves us to return to a life of leisure study today.
