BarCampSheffield Day 2

May 27th, 2007 at 17:18 by Dean

Day 2 has now finished. And what a day it was. Whats really good to know is that London isn’t the centre of the universe when it comes to great ideas and execution in the UK re: Web applications.

I’ll post a detailed report of each demo next week once I’ve collated all of the links / info and get you guys access to some of the new application due to hit the scene over the next couple of months.

Photo’s of the event can be found at flickr

Some facts:-

  1. 62 attended the event
  2. 21 presentations on Day 1
  3. 14 live demo’s on Day 2
  4. 45 pizza’s eaten
  5. 260 bottles of beer, lager & cider drunk before the pub crawl :-)
  6. 330 photo’s uploaded to flickr during the event
  7. 75 “BarCampSheffield” t-shirts adopted

All in all - a very enjoyable event - and the first of many I hope.
regards

Dean

BarCampSheffield Day 1

May 27th, 2007 at 08:27 by Dean

Over 60 people turned up for Day 1 of BarCampSheffield, with a good mix of technologists, business owners and students. The presentations (21 in total) were run along two tracks where campers could choose which one to attend.

Notable presentations were by Adam Bardlsey and Wojtek Kutyla - who won a slingbox each as voted for by the attendees.

Adams presentation was a live coding demonstration using Ruby on Rails - where in 30 mins (alright 29mins and 30 seconds) he managed to build the core components of the voting application for the day. Wojtek’s presentation covered usability and design.

There are plenty (over 200) of photo’s uploaded on flickr for those interested.

Day 2 is the live demo’s of applications / mashups and promises to be just as interesting.

“Keep It Simple”

May 26th, 2007 at 12:45 by Colin Ogilvie

“Keep It Simple” is the name of the presentation that our very own Wojtek is giving at BarCamp Sheffield here at PlusNet. Hopefully he’s going to make the presentation available later. Update: Available here

Wojtek has been telling us internally about some of the aspects of this internally over the last week, and is now presenting it externally.

From the perspective of a developer rather than a designer, it’s quite interesting, as it talks about keeping the information simple, and minimizing the length of time it takes to do things and the information you need to remember.

Updated Broadband Premier expected speed page

May 25th, 2007 at 14:17 by Ian Wild

We have updated the expected speed page for our PlusNet Broadband Premier customers.

After an introduction and then a quick removal, the speed table has returned. The new page shows the minimum rate limits that will apply for Premier customers using our network at busy times (Which differs from the fixed levels for BBYW products). More…

Wiki’s

May 24th, 2007 at 15:56 by Colin Ogilvie

Internally at PlusNet, we make use of Wiki’s for storing some of our internal documentation and notes. I recently had to complete some documentation within the Wiki, regarding the new webmail platform that was built.

You might thing this seemed like a simple task, which admittedly, if I was wanting to just do a completely plain text page - but I needed to include some markup, including some internal links, some plain text and some emphasis. However, I was soon to realise that this wasn’t the case…

Being someone who generally uses HTML and Forum Software, I’d have expected to have <b> or [b] to make text bold… but no, MediaWiki makes use of ”’bold”’ to produce bold text. Now, it may just be me, but isn’t that rather unintuitive? Given the popularity of Wiki’s, maybe it is just me and I’m “set in my ways” given the popularity (and usefulness) of site’s like WikiPedia - where many other people seem to keep cope with them fine.

Tasty Morsels #1

May 23rd, 2007 at 18:17 by Tamlyn Rhodes

Here are some links I’ve collected in my travels. I’ll try and make these posts a regular thing. Enjoy.

35 Designers x 5 Questions - Top designers answer 5 questions about design, css, fonts, design books & magazines. Makes for some inspirational reading.

Jacob Nielsen on Command Links - As the boundaries between the web and desktop become increasingly blurred, what is the difference between links and buttons?

HTML 5 - In a surprise move, the WHATWG and W3C kiss and make up. Which can only be a good thing for the rest of us.

The demise of technical writing - Nobody needs writers of instruction manuals in a world where things are so easy to use that nobody needs instruction manuals at all! If only.

The $100 laptop - it weighs 1.5kg, it’s waterproof, it runs for 10 hours on one battery, it has a bigger screen and 3 times the wifi range of my current laptop… at a 10th of the price. Seriously impressive.

Coming Soon : Stronger Passwords

May 21st, 2007 at 19:04 by Liam

Hi all,

Quick heads up that on Wednesday we will be rolling out changes to the platform that will allow customers the ability to choose much more secure passwords.

For those that don’t know, customers are currently restricted to using a 5-8 character password containing numbers and lowercase letters that must start with a letter! The option to allow stronger passwords has been the most voted for suggestion on the Usergroup Issue Tracker for a while now and we recognise that it’s something a lot of you have been asking for.

As of Wednesday customers will be forced into choosing a password that’s between 8 and 16 characters when they signup. This password can also contain any of the folowing characters:

!#$%&()*+,-./:;?@[]^{|}~
0123456789
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ_abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

You will not be forced into changing your existing details so anyone with a password not meeting this criteria can continue using their current credentials.

Password changes on the portal will propagate around all the systems (FTP, Mail, Portal access etc.). The only system that will not support the new password format will be FrontPage. FrontPage will only take into account the first 8 characters.

If anyone has any questions or feedback then please feel free to contribute to this thread and I’ll do my best to provide answers.
